Dance like MILLIONS are watching...

Not that this is anything "new" but I was reminded this weekend how absolutely fascinating the effects of internet exhibitionism are. For a PRIME example: This lip-syncing Wunderkind, Keenan Cahill, who is approximately 15 years old, dealing Maroteaux-Lamy Syndrome is now over-capacity on twitter viewers because of his gusto for pop music. You gotta love how he just lets his freak-flag-fly, as it were, and I mean no offense by using that term. On the contrary!

I guess I just find it interesting how - in one generation - we can go from dancing like no one is looking (when no one is looking) to broadcasting our bedroom dances across the globe for the amusement of others (and perhaps to the satisfaction of our own egos?)

Interesting note: even Katy Perry tweeted about him once this blew up...

Javier - Where ART thou?

Ever see something and it just sticks with you? Or somehow pops back into your mind years later? That is exactly what is going on with me and Javier Tellez right now. Back in 2008 his film colaboration with Creative Time was shown at the Whitney Biennale. It shared the experiences of six blind New Yorkers interacting with an Elephant for the first time.
Inspired by the Indian folk tale "The blind men and the Elephant" Telez's "Leter to the blind / for the use of those who see" also inspired the title for an exhibit in Berlin called "For the use of those who see" which included a film by John Baldessari called "Time and Temperature" (1972-73).

When I recalled the project I immediatly looked it up again to see what the artist is up to now - since his work has so much staying-power in my mind. But I can't seem to find anything more recent. How sad!

Maybe that will be his one great work. And maybe that is ok.

new obsession - nuns+art

Last night I watched the short film "la chatte andalouse" (or "The Female Cat from the South of Spain") (part of a collection of short films called "Wholphin: Issue 4"). It is a charming story of a nun who finds herself completing an installation for an eccentric artist on her death bed, and her consequent discovery of what might be considered more "earthly" delights.

Completely lovable. Completely French.

I also have a vested interest in Sister Wendy Beckett who has dedicated her life to God and the study of art. Being a consecrated virgin, I find her dedication of her physical/earthly body and mind to be a lovely gift.

She is known for speaking easily regarding the sensual or sexual nature of the human experience within art and life, and of God as the creator of physicality. Her un-prudish notions are refreshing and encouraging to the believer that hopes for sophisticated discussion within the Church on culture, and yet she has extremely high standards for what she would consider to be good art.
