Sometimes something creative happens, but not often...

Walking by Dior, I noticed an installation referencing Andy Warhol's factory days... or rather the "Silver Factory" (originally dubbed for the decor of one of it's residents) where he came up with this Silver Mylar "Flotation" idea. A pivotal moment for art history, a so-so window display. I know it probably makes me a snob but I just feel like this reference is lost on most of the tourists walking Madison this season.

I am not sure how I feel about this completely.
Over the weekend my friend dressed up as the author of fashion blog, Style Rookie, and then I go online to discover nowness covering what that little girl wore as her costume! Many things run through my mind - like "wow, I love her costume idea - why couldn't I have thought of that?" and "what a simulacra within a simulacrum" or "am I getting old by pointing out the novelty of the whole thing?"...

Anticipating the crowd of photographers and bloggers, perched and ready for some action in front of the new Lincoln Center Fashion tent, I decided I really wanted to pull out all the stops this September. I'm not normally one to flash the brand names, so I tried to keep everything aesthetically simple, however with a few special details.

Here is how I made my fashion season debut:

Fashion Freaks of the Industry

Here in all their GLORY is a great sampling of the Fashion industry greats, and a quintessential example for why I find it so interesting that many people still think that Fashion is about fitting in. Sure, it helps us identify one another, or with a group, but the real icons in fashion will always be somewhat of a freak show.
So work it and let your FREAK FLAG FLY!

Tavi - Child author of the Style Rookie blog. This girl has a unique voice and passion for fashion. The blog was started when she was just eleven years old. She comes from a generation where, in order to stand out, you really have to be an exhibitionist. (I mean to use this word in a more demure fashion - not as being lewd or indecent, but rather exposed in a more transparent way.)

It is clearly NOT only a generational thing that her blog and her general fame has taken off - she is a genius, and if she wanted it, she may one day step into the shoes of Ms Wintour, or the like.


Talley - André Leon Talley, need I say more? This Larger-than-life character might come across as Vouge's necessary foil to the strait-faced Anna, or the strange uncle of the fashion world, but what can you expect from someone whose first paid job was assistant to Andy Warhol?




Mira - Shorty swing my way! This accomplished (aprox 5 foot) Russian lady blew my socks off when I recently looked her up. She has really killed it - working for the biggest names of fashion, and obviously owning her own glamour all the while. Her Big news is that she is expecting a little addition to her family next month! Way to have it all!

I see pride! I see power! I see a bad-ass mother who don't take no crap off of nobody!

r13 Bear Jacket

Ok, Ok... This Fall it's "ALL ABOUT outerwear"! And Mackage has really reved me up to the idea! I am so obsessed with their jackets! HOWEVER my obsession has gotten to a point where I feel I must speak out more specifically on my opinions of Biker, Bomber and Lifestyle versus Fashion.

First of all, the issue of Motorbikes.

My current feelings about philistines with fixer-uppers and their dreams of throwing women on the back have been tried and remain true. (Shout-out to my friend "beer", and C.H. whose bike I never did get a look at.) In my experience, any indulgence of the bike-in-back routine - will only result in my own detriment.

The Vespa man, on the other hand, is much different. The Vespa itself seems to me to be an egalitarian machine. Stylish women and men alike, BOTH look attractive on them and can remain in control. Poised.

Now, granted, some lovers just seem meant to fly past at 90 mph; chrome, leather, rubber; all wheeling toward some kind of bright sexy chaos, but I think you gotta earn the trust to get to that point. Trust in your co-pilot, as it were.

To sum-up: Although I am inexplicably drawn to the leather seams and stitches that are popping up all around these ol' city streets, I am in no rush to hop on a bike, jump out of a plane, try out any extreme sports, or sacrifice my body -OR- heart to recklessness.
