ARTIST OF THE DAY: Jen Mills

I'm so proud!
Pictured in Today's Fashion & Style section of the New York Times, Miss Mills is a note-worthy up-and-coming performance and video artist. She is known for her electronic news-letter 'Zine' (mentioned previously), her big eyes, and her quirky video portraits. From making-out with a red balloon, caressing a plunger, and faking a pregnancy with a towel, this red-head is always entertaining, and never what you expect.

ARTIST OF THE DAY: Innocent Smith

Elijah W. Smith's project, "Innocent Smith", has launched a blog advertising it's agenda to react to the Gospel of Jesus Christ in these three ways:

1. ... (Theology)
2. ... (Social Justice)
3. ... (Discipleship)

The blog goes on to elaborate on creative and humane intentions of serving the community (dare we say, the world?) in mind, body, and soul.

EWS is a "jack of all trades" - dabbling in illustration, mural art, costume design, but primarily performative work using the guitar, voice, and playful theatrics. You can check out one such performance on youtube: HERE.

-Diving bell and the Butterfly is the most compassionate movie my memory can recall.
The hope of transcendence in this film is achieved not only through ones own dignity (via imagination and memory) but through the grace and humanity of many patient supporting rolls. Each one seems somehow sainted through an arduous process of rehabilitating an undeserving man. Yet through the events of the film, it carries a posture of irony, humor, and "not sweating the small stuff". I discovered that many people involved in this film were closely tied to the man it was based on and the events that did occur. I find this film, as a project, to be very important indeed.
Very redeeming. It doesn't drag you through too many pangs of empathetical pain (such as a a more violent film may - a Hotel Rwanda, or a Life is Beautiful), yet shows a truth to life, death and their tension. A healing process to artist-gone-director, Julian Schnabel, and honor to his father, and a gift to all who struggle with their own mortality.
Please see this movie. Not just for its aesthetic artistry, or for the poetry in the text, but for HOPE-sake.

Artist of the Day: John Silvis

John Silvis is a man of many talents. He has not only exhibited his own work (most notably his black and white portraits and portraits in cars) but also nurtures young talent through his New York Center for Art and Media Studies (NYCAMS).

As mentioned in a previous post - they are having a benefit art auction this Saturday.

His involvement in the creative community is the most well rounded of anyone I have ever met. When he isn't making his own work in a Williamsburg studio, he is introducing a young artist to new ideas or new opportunities. Also acting as a dealer for alum of his program he sees the cycle all the way through to keeping relationships with collectors and gallery directors.


I love john's photos and his multimedia work inspired by his favorite cars, however his real contribution is his dedication to the social network of people involved in the arts. He really knows how to nurture the potential in young artists, by discerning who has the gumption to see their potential through, and then helping them make the most of it.


I highly recommend you visit the center, and take some time to talk with John, if you get the chance, I am positive you will greatly benefit from that interaction.

ARTIST OF THE DAY: Wayne Adams

I originally became aware of Wayne's photo realism paintings at the New York Center for Art and Media Studies. However I soon found that there was much more to Mr. Adams. His quirky projects range from Portraits of Jesus - friends photographed wearing an hyperbolically-faux beard and wig set (pictured above), to BFF t-shirts (pictured below). He also co-founded a t-Shirt line: Umani clothing whose ethos is social and environmental responsibility.

Austrailian Fever - Stream of Consciousness

I recently found this stunning knit at a place called EVA NY. I went there for a special sale event highlighting a friend's line. I was instantly drawn to this piece for it's vibrant colors and it's texture. This is not a print. it is a textured knit cape/hoodie. I was reminded of a brief stay in Australia back in 2000 when I first saw this technique.


Coogi is an Ausie brand that stakes the most claim in this technique, but I am on the hunt now to find more designers using this technique and applying it to different forms. Here is some Coogi, so you get an idea...

I rarely make fashion predictions, but oddly enough - I have a hunch that Clogs (and Mules) are going to make a serious effort to get into the lime light. I am willing to embrace it as long as they steer clear of those turned up toes, and the exposed metal brads. Oh yeah - and can they come in a narrower width?

...also, I couldn't find it, but Recent Eliminee, Sandra Nyanchoka, from America's Next Top Model had become somewhat known for her red plastic wedge clogs. I remember seeing something similar online in "smoke". If anyone sees them, let me know!

This trend seems to be saddle-backing on the already popular Bootie from 06/07, but I'm seeing more wedges, and attention to the form of the front of the shoe (more mule shapes).

Here is an old excerpt on that trend...

Everywhere, the shoes contributed to an altered silhouette: at Balenciaga, it was platform boots hobbling down the runways with bubble skirts and skinny pants; at Chloé we saw chunky, cognac-colored wedges with baby doll dresses and slouch pants. While chunky platform wedges are all over the s/s '06 collections and campaigns, and designers from YSL to Moschino to Paule Ka are forcing the (still unproven) fashion statement, we couldn't have predicted the deep message of high platforms to complement today's complex styles. But Balenciaga and Chloé aren't the only proponents of the round shoulder jackets and platform-plus-baby-doll look. The brocade-like leather clog version at Prada was an essential vehicle for moving on from the sweet ladylike feel of recent collections. The gladiator-style half boots at Louis Vuitton only added to the modern bohemian eccentricity of that collection. At Yves Saint Laurent, the platform front of his super-high heels worked well with the more aggressive spirit in his a/w '06-'07 line. And though Terry de Havilland's platforms weren't shown on the runways, they continue to see increasing sales and new retailers are vying for their platform classics. The silver and natural-colored python versions are the best this season. It seems that designers are forcing women to feel new lines of the body, and to embrace the challenge of dressing up. For this new mandate, platforms make the most forceful assertion.
